DNA Identification

The DNA Identification module provides a tool for identification of an applicant based on a DNA profile stored in the criminal galleries or attached as evidence to a case. The module is able to identify not only the same person but also persons who share kinship with the probe – a powerful capability for victim identification, missing-person work and family-based investigations.

What can be matched

The module supports two modes of operation:

  • Direct identification – the probe DNA profile is compared with the reference DNA profiles stored in ABIS. A match indicates that the probe and the reference belong to the same person.
  • Kinship search – the probe DNA profile is compared against the reference profiles to find persons who are biological relatives. The supported kinship relations are first-degree (parent, child, sibling) and second-degree (half-sibling, grandparent, etc.) depending on the licence.

Profiles and formats

DNA profiles are stored as evidences (when collected from a crime scene) or as part of an applicant record (when collected from a known person). Standard DNA profile formats are supported (CODIS-style STR profiles).

DNA in the workflow

DNA evidence is treated similarly to fingerprint and face evidence for the purposes of cases, search history and audit. However, the ACE-V workflow is not applied to DNA evidence – the corresponding state machine is bypassed.

Hits

DNA hits use the same relationType mechanism as biometric hits. For kinship results, the type of relation (parent, child, sibling, etc.) is included as part of the hit metadata, and is preserved in the hit detail report.
